As we celebrate the Centennial of the passage of the 19th Amendment which gave women in the United States the right to vote, one wonders why it became such a difficult, painful journey. Betty Trapp Chapman's lecture will focus on women’s status in the 19th century, the roadblocks they encountered as they struggled to become voters, and the perseverance they displayed in never giving up. An exhibit, Houston Women Cast Their Ballots: Celebrating 100 Years of the Right to Vote, will open in The Heritage Society Museum on April 3. It will focus on the suffrage activity of women in the Texas movement, especially in Houston.
