Painted Churches Tour – Schulenburg, Texas
Discover the breathtaking beauty and rich history of Schulenburg, Texas, as you embark on a tour of the famous Painted Churches—architectural treasures that serve as a testament to faith, tradition, and artistry.
Nestled in the rolling hills between Austin and Houston, Schulenburg is a thriving yet peaceful town of 2,852 citizens. Its roots trace back to an 1831 land grant from the Mexican government, and over time, German and Czech immigrants settled here, bringing their customs, craftsmanship, and architectural style to life in remarkable ways.
Among their most striking legacies are the Painted Catholic Churches, built in the late 1800s and still active today. These churches may not have been the towering cathedrals of Europe, but their interiors became artistic masterpieces—each one adorned with stenciling, freehand art and murals, faux marbling, stained glass, and gold-leaf details, creating an atmosphere of awe and reverence.
Their historical significance was formally recognized when, in 1984, they were placed on the National Register of Historic Places, and later, in 2005, Schulenburg was proudly designated by the 79th State Legislature as the Official Home of the Painted Churches of Texas.
Join members from The Heritage Society on a bus trip and guided tour through these extraordinary spaces, where each brushstroke tells a story of devotion and perseverance. Experience the vivid artistry, hear the fascinating histories, and see why these churches remain cherished landmarks of Texas heritage.
The Painted Churches experience includes bus trip, buffet lunch at popular local restaurant, tour to five (5) churches, happy hour, snacks & drinks, and free parking.
