Listed as the most famous House in Texas by Readers Digest for the fourth year in a row, is the Reverend Jack Yates House (Father of Juneteenth) built in 1870 in Freedmen’s Town about 5 years after Emancipation. The house was relocated to Sam Houston Park by his family and is available for tours. The house is also a UNESCO site of memory for telling the story from plantation to emancipation.
The Heritage Society (THS) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization whose mission is to tell the stories of the diverse history of Houston and Texas through collections, exhibits, educational programs, film, video, and other content.
