Bluebonnets are not only found in Texas. While the most famous variety, Lupinus texensis, grows in the Texas Hill Country, the state actually has four other official state flowers, all members of the large lupine genus. One of these is Lupinus plattensis, which is found in the Texas Panhandle's sandy dunes and is the only perennial species in the state. It grows to about two feet tall, blooms in mid-to-late spring, and is known as the dune bluebonnet, the plains bluebonnet, or the Nebraska Lupine
