Monthly Lecture Series

The Unfinished Business of Suffrage
By Anne Sloan, Historian, Author, & Co-Curator

The Heritage Society is presenting a finale event for our museum exhibit “Houston Women Cast Their Ballots: Celebrating 100 Years of the Right to Vote!”.

Anne Sloan will first highlight Houston leaders from this era. Then, Sloan will open a Q&A on Zoom about the unfinished work we must do to reach full equality…utilizing the 19th Amendment and using our voice to make the necessary changes 100 years later!

To celebrate Women’s History Month, attendees will first attend a pre-recorded, online lecture that highlights and honors the following female leaders who reside in Greater Houston and are gamechangers in their fields of expertise:

·         Dr. Nitza Margarita Cintrón, former Chief of Biomedical Operations and Managing Director of the Life Science Research Laboratories at NASA (JSC);

·         Congresswoman Sylvia R. Garcia, U.S. Representative for Texas's 29th congressional district;

·         Dr. Milicent Mimi Goldschmidt, a microbiologist who made a profound impact on the U.S. Space Program;

·         Lisa Falkenberg, Houston Chronicle’s Vice President of Opinion;

·         Dr. Edith Irby Jones, known as the “Barrier-Breaking Doctor in the South”;

·         Dr. Alicia DeJohn Kowalski, full professor at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center;

·         Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, U.S. Representative for Texas's 18th congressional district;

·         Dr. Ruth J. Simmons, first Black president of Smith College and the first Black female president of an Ivy League university; and

·         Dr. Eileen K. Stansbery, Deputy Director, Exploration Integration and Center, and Chief Scientist at NASA Johnson Space Center.

Participants will then join us in live question and answer (Q & A) session via Zoom.

Members can participate for free by emailing tours@heritagesociety.org. Non-members are invited to participate for $5 and register here.

Our current museum exhibit, “Houston Women Cast Their Ballots: Celebrating 100 Years of the Right to Vote!” closes on March 31, 2021. Come see it in-person, as a small group, or virtually before the exhibit ends. More information here.
